PIG SANDWICH THAT BECAME A BANQUET

WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. In Gie Ilause of Representatives, Mr. J. J. Malier (Otaki), discussiiig the question asked by Mr. A. G. Osborne Onehunga) last Fridav about a gathering at Paremata attended by Mr. Malier, said the question was one of the most trivial ever asked in the House. The district newspaper referred to "unique and dainty dislies" served at the gathering but Mr. Malier said he arrived latc and all he ate was a sandwieli of wild pig — a real Captain Cooker. It. was an ordinary countrv dance supper. ilr. S. W. Sniith (Hobson) said the food served at Paremata was out of the ordinary supplies yivailable to evervone. Could that be said of a gathering held under the auspices of . th.e,i P.rijme "Minister at which 21 pigs, 200 fowls, 25 hcad of cattle, 400 loaves, 10 tons of potaloes and kumera, 50 cases of fruit, 10 bags of sugjir and 1G boxes of butter were coiisumed? Mr. Nasli said it was a gathering of thousands of people associated with au historic occasion linked with the part played by the Maori people in the war. Mr. Sniith: It had nothing to do with tlie war. It was fo.r the Ratana church at Mangamuka. Mr. Nasli said 011 that occasion the food provided was no more than necessary for the large number of people. As for the Paremata function he was pleased there were women associated with the organisations who would prepare food for social gatherings. His own constituents had done the same foi him. The Member for Onehunga had in mind the need to watch all food eonsumption at this time. Opposition members: Oli! Did he watch the Maori one? Mr. Osborne said he was sorry Mr. Maher had arrived so late that he got , only a wild pig sandwich. Perhaps the niember had a wild pig trotter in the ; other hand. It was hop^d that not toc • many pet pigs would become wild pigs during the campaign to save food.
