SHANNON BOWLING CLUB

ANNUAL ^ GENERAL MEETING The, annual general meeting of the Shannon Bowling Cluh was held in the chambers of the Bank of New Zealand last Thursday evening, when Mr. A. R. Mills presided over a fair attendance of members. Those present were Messrs. E. Spencer, H. L. Norris, A. F. Birss, E. Thorne, N. Batt, R, Hook, J. T. Bovis, F. Edmonds and E. Hook. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. S. Morrison, J. A. Roach, McKenzie, J. R. Bibby, H. Knowles, C. M. Cronquest and I. Hemmingsen. The resignation of Mr. R. S. Downes was received with regret. The following were proposed as new members and accepted by the meeting: Messrs. A. North, V. C. Robinson, F. O. Burtt, G K S. Fitzgerald, R. O. Patrick, C. C. King, G. Simpson and Dr. J. M. Wilson. Mrs. G. S. Fitzgerald was proposed as a member of the Croquet Club and accepted. In his report the president, Mr. Mills, stated that he was pleased to see that the bowling season was again approaching, and he extended a welcome to all present. Mr. Mills commented favourably on the financial position of the club. Last season the club membership stood at 37, and the president said he was sure that v/ith the help of members this could be increased considerably this coming season. Reference was made to the great loss suffered by the club in the passing of Mr. W. Clayton. Concerning its activities, Mr. Mills stated that the club had participated in the Dixon Cup and Triangular Shield matches, and a local rink had the honour of defeating Mr. Spearman's rink 'n the Levin R.S.A. tournament. Working bees on the green had done wonderful work in improviug its condition. The green superintendent and greenkeeper had attended the Bowling Association conference at Palmerston North, and thanks were due to these two gentlemen for their report, which was presented to the local club members. Reference was also made to the excellent performanee put up by the ladies of the local Croquet Club at the Palmerston North tournament. Mr. Mills concluded his report by extending his sincere thanks to his fellow officers, and to all members for the assistance given him during his term as president. Several members spoke of the work done by Mr. Mills during his term of office, and expressed. regret. that he would not be accepting the office for the coming season. Hook; centre delegate: Mr. H. W. Bovis (Palmerston North) ; auditor: Mr. J. T. Bovis; refreshment committee: Messrs. T. Bell and A. Birss; programme commit- . tee: Messrs. C. Cronquest, V. Bateman, I. Hemmingsen and H. Norris; coaches: Messrs. E. Thorne and E. Spencer; stewards: Messrs. R. Hook, J. Roach and L. Hook; greenkeeper: Mr. N. Batt. In connection with an increase in the subscriptions, following a discussion a motion moved by Mr. Bateman was carried that the subscriptions be increased to £3 10s with a discount of 10s if paid by

December 1, and the subscription for new members be £2 with a discount of 10s if paid by the same date. The secretary was instructed to notify all members and intending members of the increase. On the motion of Mr. Edmonds, it was agreed that lockers be allocated to members who requested them at no charge. Mr. Bovis suggested that as soon as an opening date had been arranged the secretary notify all .members with full information. On the motion of Mr. L. Hook, it was agreed .that an honours board 'be' ob£ained for the recording of championship wirmers. Mr. Mills outlined "the excellent work that Mr. C. E, Hook had done for the Shannon Club while he was a resident of . the: town, and proposed that Mr.. Hook be' 'made a ffife member of the; club; Other speakers also remarked on the asset Mr. Hook, had been to the club, and Mr, Mill's motion was carried unanimously. Mr. Mills also expressed pleasure at having Mr. E. J. Spencer bacx in the club after his recent illness. On the suggestion of Mr. L. Hook, it was agreed that a gala day be held on the green prior to the opening day. - The business terminated with a vote of thanks to the chair.
