DOMINION WOMEN'S HOCKEY TOURNEY

WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. Bitterly cold weather and intermitlent rain marred the standard of play at the New Zealand women 's hockey tournament today. Nevertheless there were some exciting eontests. It appears at this stage that the section finalists are likely to be the saine as last year. Wellington A, Otago, Auckland A and Canterbury A all have given impressive performanees. ,The success of the main centre8 since 194.1 represents a marked change from the incep'tion of the K cup tournament. In 1924 women 's hockey was strongest in the country areas with Eastern Southland, Southland and Euahine having moat successes. 1 Among today 's games a scoreless draw betweep. Eangitikei and Rotorua was a partieularly thfilling one. Rangi ;tikei did praetically all the attacking, B. Iwikau, J'. Paterson, L. Paterson and L. Christian in.the forwards combining cleverlv. However, a magnilicent defensive game by W. Rikihana (right tull back), an 18-year-old former pupu of the Turakina Maori Girls' College, saved the day for Rotorua. Her dislay was one of the finest in the tournament to date. Otago had a comfortable win over Wellington Maoris with H. JelMes (iuside left), B. Sparrow and W. Middleton also in the forward line and E. Blaekie (right half) revealing fine stick work. ^ Canterbury A had little difficulty in disposing of Wellington B. Canterbury B and South Canterbury were fairly evenly matched but the former 's placements showed better judgment. N. White (eentre half) aml L. Tini (full back) were outstanding for Canterbury with J. Leslie (centre half) playing a grand game for South Canterbury. Results: — Section A Wellington A 9, Manawatu 1. Nelson 4, Bush 3.
