LOCAL AND GENERAL

Personal Mrs. Martin, who has been the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Roach, Stout Street, for the past few weeks, left yesterday afternoon for her hbme in Wellington. Preparations for Tennis The ' approach of summer is evident by the revival of activity by members of summer .sporfts organisations. The latest club to hold its annual meeting is the tennis club. The meeting will be held in the Council Chambefs tomorrow evening at 7.30. All members are requested to attend and an invitation is extended to intending members. There is every promise that the club will have a large membership this season. Litle Golfing Activity Activity at the Buckley golf links over the weekend-was almost ata standstill. On Saturday afternoon only four players took to the links. The remainder seemed to favour the Foxton races, while on Sunday the local club journeyed to Otaki to play in an inter-club match. On September 14 the Buckley Club will be favoured with a visit from the Tui Glen Club, Wellington. This fix--ture is a very ' popular arinual match. Last season when the local club visited the Tui Glen links it was defeated, and consequently lost the trophy, and it is the intention to make every endeavour to recap■ture the trophy." Community Centre for Foxton In spite of the fact that they already have an excellent town hall, Foxton is proposing to erect a community centre as a war memorial. At a recent meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce it was decided to take up the matter of the establishment of a war memorial where the borough council left off, approving tentatively of a community centre scheme. It was decided to write to the Deparment of Internal Affairs for the latest inform&tion on the subject. It is unfortunate that Shannon must let its neighbouring town show the lead once again.
