RUSSIA REFUSES TO GIVE UP AUSTRIAN OIL PLANTS
VIENNA, Aug. 31. The Russian High Commissioner for Austria (Mr. Kurassov) rejeeted the United States protest over the Russian seizure of the Lobau oil refinery. Mr Kurassov reiterated that the refinery was a Gerinan external asset as defined in the Potsdam Agreement and therefore liable to transfer to Bussia. In a statement read to the Allied Control Qommission following the rejection of. the protest, Mr. Ginsberg, acting American representative on the Commission, said Russia had chosen to regard the Lobau assets as Gferman despite the fact that Brit'ain and the United States ihterests owned every share. Sir George Rendel, chief of the. British delegation to the AustriaaTreaty Commission, said Britain was not trying to push the claimS of British interests nor cheat Russia over the Potsdam Agreement, but she wanted Austria to obtain what was rightly Austrian. Russia might rightly claini the installations and leases in some Austrian oilfields, but Britain con sidered that oil underground belonged1 -to .Austria.
