WHANGAREI, Sept. 1. The Waro mine on the Hikurangi coalfield closed its career during the weekend. the depositfi of eoal, with the exeeption of some pillars not eeonomicallv recoverable, being exliausted Since 1935 when the Waro mine was opened after the abandonment of the original Hikurangi sliaft, 350,000 tons of eoal have been obtained at an average of about 000 tons a week. The c losing* down is not causing anxietv as the miners will be eugagod at the Kamo mine a few miles distant and transport to and from Hikurangi will be a simple niatter'. The Mines .Department reeentlv amiouneed an intention to sink further bores to ascertain if suffic.ient eoal ' were ava'ilable to sink another mine in the vt'cimly of Waro.
