FARMERS ASKED TO PLAN IMMEDIATELY
AUCKLAND, August 28. The farmers' plans to set up an organisation to increase production' for the purposes of the "Aid for Britain" campaign, were outlined by Mr. R. G. Buckleton, of Wellington, a member of the action eommittee of Federated Farmers of New Zealand which is visiting the Auckland headquarters. Provincial and distriet committees are expected to be set up to expedite the drive.
"Wc are submitting plans to implement the production campaigns to a meeting of the Doruinion Council ot Federated Farmers in Wellington on September 10," said Mr. Buckleton, ' ' The proposals will probably entai] the setting up of a headquarters eommittee in Wellington representing ali the main groups of producers with cer tain departmental officers and witl power to co-opt employers' and em plovees' organisations in the solutioi of partieular problems. The province: will be asked to " set up similar com mittees and in turn provinces will se up further committees for eaeh braneh It will be the responsibility of everi braneh to ascertain from its member: the individual requirements of each t enable it to achieve the increased goal; set. It will then be the duty of tlu , provinces to deal with all local prob iems and pass on to the top eommittei in Wellington problems of a nation a eharacter involving, in many eases Government policy. "While the farmers are eonliden that a considerable increase in produc tion can be aehieved, it ean only b done by the fullest eooperation of al secti'ons of the community," continuei Mr. Buckleton. "The people of Nei Zealand must realise that if they wish ed to preserve their present standard of living, ineluding partieularly thei supplies of petrol, tobaceo, films, ade quate and full newspapers and joui nals, it can only be done by retrievinj the dollar position and at the sam time increasing our exports to Britaii by a very substantial increase i: export production. "It is equally essential to inereas all forms of local production for th local market to the limit of the avail able raw materials, ' ' - added Mi Buckleton. "Unless this is done w can make up our minds to be more shor of many elasses of goods than we wer at any time during the war years. "Until definite adviee and instruc tions go to the provinces and branche from head office of Federated Farmers it is the duty of every farmer, now an not next week, to consider just ho\ he can immediately increase produetio: this season on a short term basis am increase "production for the followin: two or three seasons on a longer terr plan," concluded Mr. Buckleton.
