STORTFORD LODGE STOCK VALUES

HASTINGS, August 27. Except for one pen of ewes and iaiubs the whole store sheep entry of 25U0 head at Stortford Lodge today consisted of wethers and wether hoggets. Interest was taken in the sale of ewes and lamb's as it was the first line of its kind this season. The 38. ewes, eight of wliich have still to lainb, were live and six-year-olds whieh were low mouthed but they were nevertlieless doin^ tlieir 33 iambs well. The price paid was 18s 6d all counted.

The attendance was the smallest for months and the sale in consequenoe laeked some of the animation of reeent auctions. Wether hoggets were not in quite such keen demand. Good hoggets made 33s 4d to 34s 3d, medium 30s ld to 32s and small 25s to 29s 9d. Down cro^s hoggets were traded at 29s 3d to 3.3's 9d. . Wether s were in keen demand kgnin ' Selling feadily at' from 39s JOd to 42s ld. Good quality young ewes were weli featured in the yarding of 1200 head of t'at sheep and for extra prime sorts values ranged from 39s lOd to 43s 4d, prime- young ewes seliing at 35s 7d to 38s lOd, heavy older ewes brouglit to 38s ld, prime making 32s ld to 3.4s lOd and uniinished to 29s lOd. Wethers were in short supply. The best offering realised 48s lOd. Other wethers brouglit 41s 4d to 47s ld. Heavy hoggets changed hands at 37s 4d to 41s lOd, medium at 30s 4d to 32s and light down to 21s lOd. Shorn two-tooths brought 26b 4d to 27s lOd. Values for store cattle were about on a par with last week. The yarding was smaller at 400 head'and ineluded a number of small consignments. In most instanees the vendors met the market. Bullocks were traded at £14 5s, threeyear steers at £13 5s to £13 9s, twoyear steers at £8 12s 6d to £11 6s and yearling steers at £6 7s. In-calf cowrs brought £6 14s and rising tlxree-year empty heifers £10 2s. Vendors of beef, particularly ox, met a setback when values deelined by from 40s to 60s a head on the high levels whieh they have held during the pasl two weeks. The entry of 220 head was noteworthy for the evenness of quajitv, particularly in the ox pens. This made it possible. for the butchers to spread their buying. Notable saies of ox on the lower levels were a consignment of 28 A.A. bullocks at from £22 13s 6d to £24 16s, an average of £23 12s'9d, and a eohsignment which averaged £22 18s.
