SHARP EARTHQUAKE

Preceded by loud rumblings, one of the sharpest earthquakes "felt in Levin for some time awakened many residents at 1.38 a.m. this morning. The 'quake began with a si'ckening swaying motion, which lasted for over a minute and ended with a sharp jolt. Palmerston North, Wellington, Napier and Gisborne also reported the shock. In Levin a minor earthquake preceded the main one by a few minutes. A Press Association message from Wellington says the Dominion Observatory estimates that the earthquakes centre was 27Q miles from Wellington, probably some distance at sea off the Gisborne coast.
