Success at Competitions At the Wellington Competitions Festival yesterday Marshall Maher, of Levin, gained second place with 79 points in the reading at sight for boys from nine to twelve years. Boxing Trophies The Levin Boxing Club acknowledges with thanks the following additional donations towards the trophies for its tou'rnament on Saturday night next: Messrs. Black ! Bros. and Mr. Hemingsen £2 2s each; Messrs. F. Nicholson, W. H. Walker and* K. Cooper £1 ls each; and Mr. C. H. Rathbone 10s 6d. J-Force Wives New Zealand had no intention of iproviding quarters in Japan for | the wives and children of members of J-Force, said the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones ) in ref erence to a Canberra cablegram in which General Robertson was quoted as saying that accommodation was available for families.

i Locomotive Shecl Destroyed Fire which broke out in the railway shed at the Taneatua station on Friday. evening a few minutes after an express engine had been housed for the night, . spread quickly throughout the shed and within a short time destroyed the whole building. Serious damage was done to the stored locomotive and tender. Burglars Active Following a burglary during the weekend when £90 worth of jewellery was stolen from a house in : Invercargill, there was a second on ' Monday night in the house of Mrs. 'J. G. Hughes, widow, and jewellery to the value of £40 was stolen. Mrs. 1 1 Hughes, who is a semi-invqlid, herd a noise but did not see theintruder.

Island Stamps A small group of islands in the 1 Pacific is to have its first issue of I postage stamps about April next, | said the Postmaster-General (Mr. ' Hackett) . Formerly they used I Western Samoa stamps. The issue j will be of half-penny, penny and : i two-penny denominations, preparJ { ed from designs submitted by Mr, j |j. Berry, of Wellington. The i [stamps will be on sale in the Toke- ! lau Islands and at Apia about April j 1 next, and will be available in j Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. A special I souvenir cover is being prepared by j the Tokelau Islands administration.
