AHCKLAISD, August 25. The seleetion of Mr. Warren Freer as the Labour Party 's candidatc in tfye Mt. Albert by-.eleetion, was announeed in Auckland today. His noniination vvas oue of nine and was endorsed today by the national executive of the Party at its quarterly rneeting in Wellington. Mr. Freer contested the Eden seat at the last general election and was del'eated by Mr. W. H. Fortune, the fmal ligures being Fortune 7055, Freer 5774. Pori) in Sandringham 27 years ago, Mr. Freer is secretary of the Auckland Labour Club. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and was on the literarv staff of the Hawke's Bay Daily Mai! and was Iater in charge oi the 'Kaikohe braneh of the No'rthern Advocate. He served in the army for three years during the second world wai-. Mr. Freer, who is organisingsecretary of the Auckland Labour Youth Club, was one of the foundation members of the Mt. Albert Amateur Athletic Club and hekl three track records. He also represented Auckland at the New Zealaiul athletic championships. He is married and lias two sons. Advice was received in Auckland that the election would be lield oii September' 24. This will mean that the campaign will be short but it is expected to bc very keenly fought witli visiting speakers taking part. Laboui will open its campaign next week. Because of the respective strengths of the parties in the House of Kepresentatives, it is expected the ability of Labour Members of Parliament to take part will be governed largely by the business before the House. However, hopes have been expressed that several members of Cabinet will be able to address the electors. The National Party will select its eandidate on September 1. The Leadei of Ihe Party, Mr. Holland, will definiteIv take part in the campaign and it is expected other promineut members oi the Party will also visit Ihe electorate.
