TWO MORE RANFURLY SHIELD GAMES ONLY
♦ DUNEDIN, August 25. If Otago is sueeessful in withstand standing Southland's challenge for the Ranfurly Shield on September 13, only one other shield game will be played this season, North Otago 's special challenge being accepted for September 27. A decision to this effect was made by the management committee of. the Otago Rugby Union tonight. The South Canterburv Union issued a special challenge suggesting September 16 or October 1. The clxairman, Mr. A. H, Cameron, pointed out that under the shield rules, no matches could be- played after September 30 and also that with Ihe Southland and North Otago matches on September . 13 and . 27 respectively and the Payne trophy match between premier teams of Dunedin and Christchurch ou September 20, no spare Saturdays were available. Mr. B. Collie, chairman of the selection committee, said the Union sliould not commit the team to an over strenuous programme. It had alreadv had three hard shield games and would play five matches on tour, meeting Southland's challenge five days after its return from the north. It was decided to advise the South Canterbury Union that it regretted that as there were no vaeant Saturdays the challenge could not be accepted.
