MOST IMMIGRANTS FIND TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION
AUCKLAND, August 24, Most of the passengers from the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Rangitata found at least temporary accommodation in Auckland after they landod on arrival from London on Saturday. Praetically all the travellers interviewed in the ship stated that accommodation had been arranged for them by friends in this country, and as a result only 12 passengers for-Auck-land returned to the liner on Saturday evening after failing to find shelter ashore. Many passengers left for the south by special train on Saturday evening. To avoid accomjnodation difficulties in Wellington 120 passengers for the South Island remained aboard the liner overnight and left by tram tonight. Before the liner arrived the Auckland
Provineial Public Relations Offiee obtained a list of avaiiabie rooms in city hotels and boarding-houses and 40 inqriirers at the office 's information desk in a city hotel lobby were given ad"dresses for aceommodation. The acting "public relations officer (Mr. Bruee W. Barnett) stated that many Aucklanders advised him that they would be happy to provide a voonv for immigrants over the weekend if they eould nftt find shelter. One Aueklander offered a room for a passenger for as long as he liked and in addition offered employinent if the man was a carpenter. As a result, said Mr. Barnett, oue qf the travelWs was given work ind accomi«odation, witliin au hour of his arrival.
