70 EARTHQUAKES IN FORTY HOURS

GISBORNE, August 24. The series of earthquakes apparently centred on the hill country settlement of Matawai, 50 miles from Gisborne, which began in the early hours of Saturday morning, continued throughout the week-end. From midgight on Friday till late today 70 were recorded tn Matawai, poipe of which were severe and others light. Two severe 'quakes shook the area before midday yesterday. All the shakes were preceded, by heavy rumhling. Practically all the chimneys in the Matawai locality are either down or badly cracked. Nq casualties are reported. The 'quakee were felt in the adjacent townships of Motu and Otoko hut not with the same severity, Tke disturhances were also felt slightly at Opotiki and up the East Coast at Tokomaru Bay.
