HEADQUARTERS AT LEVIN

MANAWATU MAJtqHING CENTRE At the annual meeting of the' N.Z. Marching and Recreation Association, held jn Wellington on Saturday, it was decided to adopt che suggestion put forward by the executive comrnittee tha.t centtes be formed throughout the Dominion. There are 19 such centres and Levin becomes the headquarters of the Manawatu Centre, the boundaries of which are from Paekaha^ riki to Marton to Woodville, all exelusive, although in the m.^an^ time Marton wiil become part Of the Manawatu Centre. v It wiil be reealled that originally the headquarters ,of the centre were proposed for " Palmerston North, but the Horowhenua Asso^ciation, with the assistance of the Junior Chamber of. Commerce, Mr. H. B. Burdekin (Mayor 6f Levin), Mr.>R. E. Downes (Mayor of Shan^non) , and Mr. J. J. Maher, M.P., put strong elaims through its^resident delegate, Mr. R. J. Davies, of Petone, to have the headquarters made at Levin. Jt wiil be a source of satisfaction to all concerned tp know that their efforts have beeri successful, and the Horowhenua Marching Association takes this opportunity of thanking those wbo supported the representations. North Island Championships The North Island marching championships for the 1947-48 season wiil be held at Rotorua on January 24, A new march plan was submitted to the meeting and npproved, It is a much more spectacular march than last season's, so the general public can look forward to some first class displays in the future. Mr. V. E. Rhodes (Napier) handed to the president the Florence Harvey Cup, to be competed for annuajly at the North - Island championship. This 'trojjhy, vafued at 100 guineas, was originally presented to the Napier Association by Miss Florence Harvey in 1938, but the association, with the approval of the donor, has decided that the field of competition for such a valuable trophy should be widened. Representing the Horowhenua Association at the meeting were Messrs. R. Murray, J. Macfarlane, D. Convery and R. Davies (Petone) , resident delegate. i
