WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
OTAKI' S AUGTJST MEETING Despite very heavy rain there was a large attendance of members at the August meeting of the *Otaki Women's institute, over. which Mrs. W. Taylor presided. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. Taylor, Herbert, Knox and Ingles. A letter was read from a firm in Auckland advising that W.I. badgeswould be on sale again shortly at the price of 2s. A schedule for the Otaki H. and D. Society's show on September 5 was received and members were asked to compete in rhe various classes. The Waikanae W.I. forwarded a schedule for its annual flower show a.nd arts ■ and crafts exhibition on September 19. Mrs. Taylor reminded members that Miss Hawkins would be visiting Otaki in August and September to give lessons n various subjects. Two new members were welcomed with hopes for their happiness in being associated with the institute.
A motion of sympathy in the death of her husbanci was passed with Mrs. Noel West, who was the founder of the Otaki W.I. The chief topic of interest for the afternoon was a demonstration of the making of floral sprays by Mrs. McDonald, of Wellington. Members closed eagerly round the table to see every movement of her deft fmgers as they skilfuily and quickly arranged an artistic spray. Next a very pretty posy of flowers, suitable for a sick person, was arranged. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. McDonald, and her offer to attend the September meeting and demonstrat'e painting on wood was gratefully accepted. The singing circle then rendered three songs which were greatly appreciated by those present. At this juncture Mrs. Taylor said the institute now had to farewell another very popular member, Mrs. A. Ashwin, who would be leaying shortly for New Plymouth. ,She spoke highly of Mrs. Ashwin as a member and of her willingness toi help in any way at all times, and on behalf of members presented her with a lovely fruit bowl. Mrs. Ashwin, who was taken by surprise, sunably acknowledged the gift, and members rose and sang "For She's a Jolly ood Feliow." A dainty afternoon tea was dispensea by the hostesses. The wmners of the monthly competitions were: Best pair of gloves, Mrs. Ashwin; best flower, Mrs. Drew; best shrub, Mrs. Drew; marmalade, Mrs. Kirk. The gloves and marmalade were sold to assist the institute's parcels for Britain fund. Three letters were read from giateful recipients of food parcels. The hostesses for September will be Mesdames Mathie, Monk, Moss, Mould, Maberly and Meagter. The competiLions will be a lady's spray and potato scones. The recipe for the latter is: 11b.' cold mas-hed potatoes, 1-oz. melted butter; mix; add a pinch of salt and then about 2ozs. flour or as much as the paste will hold; 1 teaspoon of baking powder; press flat, cut into squares and bake in hot oven for five to severn minutes.
