HOLDING OF SUPPLIES FOR EXTRA PROFITS
WELLINGTON, Aug. 21. J. B. F. Cotterill. (Wanganui) iu an urgcut queslion asked of the Minister of ludust ries and Commerce, Hon. A. H. Nonlnieyer, whether he was aware that vetailers were complaining that. they were unable to obtain their usual snpplios of subsidised commodities such as tea and sugar, and that it was alleged these subsidised commodities were being liold in stoek by merc.hants so as to obtain increased profits through prico increases follovving tlie removal of subsidies. Mr. Cotterill asked if the Minister would have tlie matter investigated iminediatelv to ensure that consumers were not eharged additional prices on eoniinodities that had been subsidised. Mr. Nordmeyer replied that tlie Price Tribunal and Food and Rationing Controller had no knowledge of moreliants holding supplies of goods to wliich tlie Member for Wanganui referred, but iminediate investigations were being made to ensure that stocks wero not witlilield and that an additional prolit was not made by the merchants and others when ultimately the subsidies were withdrawu,
