NEW PRICES FOR OATS AND BARLEY
WELLINGTON/ August 20. An inerease of 3d per b.ushel i,n the ceiling price of white oats sold by growers for the 1947-48 seas'oh, is announced by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. ■ Cililen. This replaee^ the former price of 4s l'.o.r.s.e. The Minister said the inerease was regarded as a fair assessment of the cost inerease inourred since the earlier price was fixea and was in line with increases given foi wheat and malting barley. To countei Dreaches of price orders which had been oecurring ex farm, the inaximum price of white oats had been fixed at 2£d less or 4s 04 d a bushel. The Minister said the price of malting barley was being inereased from 5s 6d to 5s 9d for approved varieties. Other varieties would remain. at the present price. The basic piice of 5s (5d for inferior varieties and 5s 9d foi superior varieties would be subject tc the same price differentials as previously, according to the areas where the barley was grown and the method used. in threshing. The price of feed barley would remain at 5s fid but North Island growers would receive a differential oi is, givdng them 6s 6d. The Minister considered that the neu prices sliould give a fair balance be tween the price of wheat and prices oi other main cereal erops and should Iead to a satisfaetory acreage being sown this season.
