WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. Allegedly beaten up by three men last night, a witness in the Murphy case was unable to appear in Court this morning. Mr. E. F. Rothwell, counsel for Brospan told the Court that he had received a message that a witness' wife had telephoned that last night her husband was beaten up and » assaulted by two men who kicked him in the ribs and he was in bed unable to move. Asked by the Magistrate, Mr. A. M. Goulding, whether he knew" anything of the circumstances, counsel said only that the wife had rung up. She said the assault took place in a club. Mr. Goulding said that Mr. Rothwell must take such steps as was necessary. The Court would grant an adjournment if necessary. Mr. W. J. Stacey, senior counsel for Murphy, said that this was the second such matter that had arisen. "We had the disgraceful instance yesterday of a suggestion of witness being interfered with." Mr. Stacey suggested that it would have been better if the, circumstances had not been mentioned. "It sounds like a little bit of window dressing," he said. It would have been sufficient to suggest if witness was physically hanflicapped irom attending. (Further details of the Murphy case appear on page 7 of this issue).
