Two Earthquakes Two shocks of earthquake were felt in Levin last night. The first was at 6.50 when there were two short and sharp jolts. Preceded by a low rumbling noise, the other shock was at 8.34 p.m. No Co-operation Auckland waterside workers have refused to accede to the "hasten food for Britain" request of the New Zealand Waterside Employers5 Association to work on Saturday afternoon and Suhday this last weekend to retrieve time lost on food liners during the recent dunnage dispute. Rat's Hiding Place Jumping out of a dustbin that Was being emptied by roundsmen in Auckland, a large rat scurried up the street, jumped on to a child's pedal car, and disappeared inside the shirt of the four-year-old driver. While the boy screamed and his mother added her share of the volumne of sound, the men caught and killed the rat, but not before the child's chest and stomach had been badly scratched. Teachers Seek Extra Heliday A request from the New Zealand Education Institute for a school holiday to enable all teachers to attend annual meetings of district branches, sent to the Canterbury School Committee's Association fpr information by the Canterbury Education Board, met with a blunt refusal. "They'll be striking next," said a member. "They have to have a ballot first," interjected another. Without further discussion it was unanimously decided to oppose the suggestion. Stevenson's Tomb The tomb of Robert Louis Stevenson on .Mo'unt Vaea, behind Apia, is being made into what the Pacific Islands Monthly describes as "a thing of real beauty," after being more or less neglected in the 60 years since Stevenson died. Under | instructions from the Administrator of Western Samoa (Colonel F. W. Voelcker) , the path which leads from the Vailima road to the tomb is being planted with selected varieties of tropical shrubs and trees. A local botanist (Mr. Charles Reed) is planting hibiscus and other shrubs at the tomb itself. , Have a C?ire 1 "Have a care, there's danger there," is a slogan which will soon become familiar to the public. Commencing today, the Junior Chambers of Commerce ,are launching their Dominion-wide appeal to road users to exe'rcise care so that lives will not be jeopardised or Iost-through negligence, and not to take unnecessary - risks on our streets and main highway s. A great deal of time and hard work has been spent in the preparation of this campaign, but the results achieved will depend entirely on the co-operation received by the public. In Levin this morning, representatives of the local Junior Chamber were engaged in distributing pamphlets and posters appropriate • to the occasion. •
