W.D.F.F. SENDS FOOD TO BRITAIN
For some time now the Otaki-Te Horo branch of the W.D.F.F. has been busy raising money to send food parcels to Britam. At nrst these were sent to the families of naval gunners, who had been guests in members' homes during the war, and also to other deserving people whose addresses were handed in, but latterly it was decided to extend the scheme aud send in bulk to one centre, the town of Portchester in Hampshire, being chosen for this purpose. Portchester, whieh has a population of 16,000, lies across the harbour from Portsmouth and therefore was in quite a "hot" spot during the war. Arrangements have been made with their local authorities for the receipt and distribution of the gift parcels by the Women's Voluntary Service. Last week the largest consignment which the Otaki-Te Horo branch has yet sent was packed and forwarded to Wellington ready for shipment overseas. Mrs. K. Taylor, of' Otaki, and Mrs. Blackburne, of Te Horo, kindly placed their homes at the disposal of members, who, with the help of Mr. W. M. Simcox and Mr. Blaekburne, packed a total of 68 parcels, containing tinned meats, fats, milk and other foods, besides a large box of soap. It is now proposed to send a further number of parcels in time for Christmas, and with this in view next Friday, August 22, a .combined shop and street day will be held in | Otaki, Otaki Railway and Te Horo, when it is expected to raise a substantial amount for this splendid : nurpose.
