Bernard Shaw wants Gary Cooper for the lead in "The Devil's Disciple." Joan Crawford, who said she would never, never marry again, is going to wed Greg Bautzer. Madeline Carroll, who previously announced that she would never make another picture, wants to go before the Hollywood cameras again. Maurice Chevalier has New York standing in the aisles ' eheering his return to Broadway. After a sea.son on Broadway Chevalier will return to the films. Sidney Bernstein is back in London from Hollywood ' with Ingrid Bergman's signature to a Bernstein contract. The blonde is passing_ as a boxoffiee draw. Carole Landis has gone brunette, and Paulette Goddard, Joan Bennett, Jane Wyman and Peggy Cummins all say they did not click till they heaved out the golden locks.
Darryl Zanuck says he will always .make controversial pictures. "I'm never happy unless I'm in trouble." Some columnists are.like that too. William Powell has been borrowed by Universal from Metro to make several films. The first, "The Senator is Indiscreet," marks the directing debut of playwright George Kaufman, with the script written by Charles MacArthur. The second film will be Nunnally Johnson's "Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid." Production on George 'Raft's latest film, "Intrigue," has beer held up while George is in hospital. George went straight from the set to hospital for an urgent operation on his tonsils. It is hoped production will be resumed next month. A flne crop of new babies is appearirg in British filmland. Latest mothers are Judy Campoell, Rosamund Johns, Nai Zetterling, Celia Johnson and Catherine Ryan. Following two years' absence from the screen, Glenda Farrell has been signed by Cornell Pictures to play an important role in "The Double Take," a mystery-thriller with Franchot Tone, Janet Blair, Janis Carter and Adele Jergens in the leads. The blonde comedierne returned to Hollywood recently after two seasons appearing in stage plays on Broadway. Her last movie assignment was at Columbia in 1945, when she was seen in "Ever Since Venus." Larry Parks and Marc Platt, both of whom are now acting in "The Swordsman," are better than average friends. Marc, a native of Seattle, grew up with Betty Garrett, and they went to dancing school together in Washington city. A few years later Larry met Betty and when the two were married, Marc served. as bestman at the ceremony. Before beginning work in "The Swordsman," Larry and Marc appeared in another Columbia film, "Down to Earth."
After one of thqse- lovers' spats, Yvonne de CarlO' has patched up her engagement to actbr Howard Duc. Yvonne lost 'her temper and flung back Howard's' diamond solitaire when he refused to take her horne from' a party at 3. a.m. "We are a couple of confused people who disagree on many things," said Duff after the patch up, "but we are going to see if we can't do better from now on; at least I'd rather have separations before. marriage than afterwards." Claudette Colbert has been signed by Frank Capra for the role of wife opposite Spencer Tracy in "State of the Union " In the picturisation of the famous stage hit, Miss Colbert co -stars with Tracy, with whom she first teamed in "Boom Town."
