R.S.A. FOOD PARCELS
PRESIDENT URGES MEMBERS TQ QREATER EFFORT3 . The British people were appreeiative of the.fact that others wepe concerned at tlie fo.od posifciop, and had rallied round in theih period qf - trouble, S84.d Mf.- Qt M: Burdekin, O.B.E., when speaking to members of the Levin R.S.A. .at the quarterly meeting of the brarich on Thursday night. "You would hardly credit the effect the receipt pf thpse parceis has pn the people" pver there," he added, "and the re.al affection they' felt for the people on th,e pfhpr sjde pf the glpbe." Prior to Mr. Burdekin's talk, however, concerri was expreSsed by the president of the braneh, ML N, M. Thomson, at the slpw resppnse pf members to th.e a'ppeal fpr fupsds fo maintain the supply of p.ar.cels to the families of returned servipemen in Broughton, EnglandThe committee had only £5.0 in hand, he said, sufficient for the next batch. of parceis, and he thought that the only way to maintain an even balance would be for each niember to make a monthly contributipn. Even a shilling a mpnth would lielp. It would be only for a year or two and he felt that ,as the braneh had started off so well, every endea-vour should be made to see that the scheme did not collapse. The task of collecting the money had rested on only two members, Mr. J. Corbishley and Mr. L. Hair, and he appealed- for two additional members to assist when' necessary. He also asked for one other to assist the women , for a few hqurs on two days of each month. There were many jobs that were too difficult for the women to handle. A suggestion that the R.S.A. japply to the Levin Borough Council for permission to hold a . Sunday night concert as a means of
raising money for this project was forthcoming from Mr. H. B. Burdekin, Reporting on the result ,of a recent circular appeal which had been posted to members, Mr. Hair said that the response fiad been negligible. He claimed that if he) could get a guarantee of 2s 6d or more monthly from each member, it would be most heartening. The scheme was principally an R.S.A. one, and it should not haye to be continually going to the public for assistance. A collection taken by Messrs. Hair and Corbishley- after the meeting netted £8 6s.
