ROAD DEATHS INCREASE

WELLINGTON, August 14. Fatal traffic accidents for the first eix mouths of tlie year show an increase of 24 per cent. over those for the correspondiug pe'riod last year. This was aunounced bjr the Transport Dcpartment. Of 126 people killed on New Zealand roads between Januarv and June, 1947, 66 were occupants of motor vehicles, 39 were motor cyclists ot pillion riders, 15 cyclists and 20' pedestrians. Fifty-two of the accidents causing those deaths oecurred during day light and 49 at night. Thirteen of tlieni were the result of motor vehicles striking railway trains or telegrapli poles.
