OTAKI MAN ON CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES
A charge of f alse p'retences x was brcught against John Desmond Donrelly, Otaki, labourer, aged 30, in the Magistrates' Court, Wellington, this week. It was alleged J:hat he obtained £145 from Thomas William Mair-Davis by falsely representing that he was a sawmiller at Te Horo and-ahle to supply buildihg timber, and that the money was to pay workmen's wages ar.d obtain the de^ivery of a saw spindle for his timber mill. Donnelly, represented by Mr. W. Heine, pleaded not guilty. Mr. Stout, S.M., eommitted him to the Supreme Court for trial. It was a case for a jury, said the magistrate. Accused had been negotiating for cutting rights and for a sawmill, but had represented that he owned a sawmill. Senior-Detective E. H. Compton condiicted the prosecution. Mr. Heine submitted that. there was no delibprate false pretence. With undue optimism, accused had miscalculated the time in which ihe could start supplying timber.
