FIVE REASONS FOR INCREASE IN CRIME

They are: — Firstly, the whereabouts of many eriminals are 7iot knoivn beeause of ehanges eause'l by the war; seconrily, a new and younger group of eriminals, manv of whom were not previously known to th-* police, is now operating; thirdly, th« scarcity of many goods made them ea.sily disposable at iiigh prices on ihe blaek'market; fourthly, the tendency of many meinbers of the public "for reasons on which it is not for us to eomment", to hoard large sums in ca.s'i instead of lodging them in banks, iifthly, an insuflicient number oi' police oftieers available for beat duty. The report stated that the number o. policeinen who were resigning before beeoming eligible l'or pensions, wai causing eoncern. Tliis tendency ap peared to be due to the belief that the police serviee no loilger compare-l favouraldy with other less irksome oceupations. There was undoubtedly uneasiness in the force and little contentment of mimi.
