MEMORIAL HALL PROJECT

GOOD PROGRESS MADE IN MOVE TOWARDS OBJECTIVE Satisfaction at the progress made towards the £10,000 objective for j the erection by the Levin R.S.A. of , a Memorial Hall an^ club rooms, , was expressed last hight • by the president of the brahch, Mr. N. M. , Thomson. The project had been going less than two ye&,rs and in that time the branch had in hand an amount in the vicinity of £6,440. In addition money had been promised to the exteiit of £1,077, which should be paid by the end of the two years. - A considerable boost had been given the fund by the addition- of the proceeds of a race meeting generously donated by the Levin Racing Club, -.continued Mr. Thomson. This sum had been between £1200 and £1300. Endeavours had since been made by Mr. H. B. Burdekin to have the meeting declared a true patriotic one so that the amount of proceeds of the meeting would be exempt'ed from taxation. This meant an amount of between £600 and £700. In this his negotiacions with the taxation department had practically succeeded. It was a iittle premature yet to say that he had succeeded, but the chances of the recovery of this amount seemed very favourable. If the branch was eventually granted this sum, it would only be through the efforts of Mr. Burdekin, who had never ceased to press his request. If all these amounts" were forthcoming the branch would have only about £1800 short of its objective. The campaign committee had drawn up a programme of events by which it was hoped this amount would be practically covered: Besides the recently-announced cabaret ball, to be held in th.e Regent Hall, it was also planned to hold a'stock drive in the autumn and a carnival on the Levin Park Domain, if possible to coincide with the flrst official visit of the Gov-ernor-General to Levin. .If these three functions were successful, it was hoped that the amount would 1 be brought down to £1000, whic^i it was proposed would be held over till nearer the building period, when a final drive would be made.
