RETURNED SERVICEMEN MEET

The August meeting of the Shannon pranch of the Keturned. Services5 Association was held in Laurvig's Hall on Saturday evening. The attendance was not large, oniy 15 rnemoers being presept. Mr. J. W. Ritchie occupied rne chair. The secrecary, Mr. E. J. Gunning, reporied tnac the membership of rne branch now stood at 247 members, of wnich 46 were members of the Tokomaru sub-branch. Mr. B. Clayton reporred on the recently-held victory social presenred by the entertainment comrnittee, and advised that as there were still aceounts to be paid and donations were still comir.g to hand, it was not possible to present a statement on tne financiai position of tne social. . On the motion of Mr. R. Hook it was resolved that as soon as all aceounts were to hand, and should there be any deflcit, this amount be paid out of the branch benevoient lund. Mr. Hook also congratulated the entertainment committee on the exceilent function, both the entertainment provided and the arrangeiner.ts bemfe most satisfactoruy carried out. Other members also expressed approval of the function. A letter wa^ received concerning the farm property at Buckley taken over for rehabilita.tion purposes, which was subjecc to flooding. It was noted that^the matter was oh the agenda for discussion at the next meeting of the local re'habiiitation commitcee. " A message of thanks was received from the Palmerston North R.S.A. for the donation of £6 towards the hcspital comforts fund. 'Ihe rirst letter of thanks was react irom a Brnish ex-serviceman for a food parcel received Irom the Shannon R.S.A. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr. F. X. Thurston, tlranking him for a donation with the social and expressing the hope that he woma soon recover from his illness. me president, Mr. J. W. Ritchie, gave an extensive report 011 the lecent N.Z.R.S.A. conierence, and 011 the motion of Mr. R. Hook was i tlianked for it. Thanks were also i extended to Mr. T. R. Kelly, the j other aelegate to the conierence, both being second war members.
