CONDITIONS IN PALESTINE
TERRORISM LEAVES NO DULL MOMENTS "Sinee the departure of the United Natio'ns commission a couple of "weeks ago there has T>e$n another outbre'ak of terrorism, so there is never a dull moment these days," says a letter from SeniorSergeant Gordon Davidson, son of Mr. N. D. Davidson, of Te Horo, writing from Palestire on July 27. "Whenever a shooting incident occurs or a bomb is exploded the air raid sirens, of which there are a' dozen or more in Jerusalem, start wailing. Then traffic and pedestrians are brought to a scandstill, ard some rather hectic bursts of firing often' result. Jerusalem is not the city it used to be. Security zones are all wired off with hundreds of troops and police as guards, patrols, etc. "I'm doing quite interesling work. It is all poli.ical and on the European side, so I reall(y have rothing to do with either Arabs or Jews. .1 travel about the country a certain amount, but would journey even more if the situation permitted it. Last month I had a brief but pleasant holiday in Amman, TransJordar, a primitive though pleasant spot in that it has no 'problem' and is a peaceful country in comparison wi.h Palestine. "The cost of living continues high here — higher than a year ago. Security costs the cour. try £8,500,000 yearly, quite a large sum for a small place. It will continue tp be an expensive item for some-iime, as I do not think the present status of Palestine can be very much altered."
