Received Wednesday, 10.50 a.m. BATAVIA, August 12. * ' In an-operation in which arirborrie troops are bemg used, Dutch forces began mopping up the whole of the Prianger district, between Bandung and the occupied province of Banjumas, aecording to a Republican report broadcast tonight. It says that many smaller towns have been occupied since August 6, and that there is severe fighting in the Prianger district's two main towns of Garut and Tasikmalaya.

Garut was attacked on August 10} from the north and south, and thei attack was supported from the air. Fighting is also going on at Singapurna, west of Tasikmalaya, j where in February, 1944, the Indo- , nesians revolted against the Japanese. There have been many casualties | among the population. Fighting was eontinuing yesterday in Garut. The report said that the Dutch operations began with the occupaaon of Kwali, north of Tjiamas, in Vest Java on the railway line between Bandung and Jogjakarta, which runs th rough the alreadyoccupied Bandjumas Province. On August 6 Tjiamas was itself occupied and Dutch troops began to march on Tasikmalaya. On August 6 also Gagreg, a j strategic mountain pass town on the railway line to Garut, was taken, beginning the second prong j of the Dutch engulfin^ advance. Tjiamas and Tasikmalaya, and paratroopers landed around the outskirts of Tasikmalaya. The same day Tadjongsari, near Sumedang, on the road to Cheribon, was shelled. Fighting began around Tasikmalaya on August 8, while next day another Dutch advance began from Gagreg on Leles, ten miles from Garut. Tjakadj ang, south of Garut, was also occupied by the paratroops. The attack on Garut began on August 10, both from Leles and Taj akadjang.
