LOCAL AND GENERAL
Person al Mr. V. J. Bateman has returned home after spending a two weeks' holiday in the South Island. Mr. Trevor King, of Gisborne, spent the weekend with his father, Mr. T. H. King, Stoat Street Flood Pxevention Duri'ng. the past twelve months the Makerua Drainage Board and its engineer (Mr. O. J. Dolan) have made the main drain in the Tokomaru area safe againsr flooding. The willow trees have now been cut and the banks built to safety for several miles. This is the first year that no flooding of cropping areas has occurred, the flooding on previous oecasions having cost the district many hundreds of acres of potatoes and onions, and the subsequent loss of thousands of pounds to the farmers. Wandering Stock Mary complaints have been received by motoriscs of the amount of stock wandering on the main roads outside of the borough. On the Mangaore-Shannon Road there have been cows straying for over two months and during the past week or so the road looks something like a mixed farm, with about ' 50 sheep and over a dozen head of stock making use of the roadway. Of late the stock have been causing considerable danger to motorists, as they use the roadway for spending their sleeping hours and many cars have narrowly averted a serious accident. It is hoped that something will be done in the near future to have the nuisance removed.
