WELLINGTON, August 8. The 1948 import schedule for JNewZeaiand gives the* United Kingdomlicences for motor-cars to the value o£nearly £3,000,000N.Z., representing just over 1)000 units, eomparei with £4,44o,r. 000 estimated to cover nearly 14/hiq units in 1947, said the New Zeaiand? representative of the Society of MotorManufacturers, London, Mr. A. W. Brown, last rught. As the schedule appeai-ed .to apply ea Oanadian motor-cars, the 1948 vaiue would be £426,000, estimated at 1416; vehicles, whereas the 1947 figures were just over £1,000,000, representing 32oU cars. No licences had been granted, as yet, to cars from the United States, froin which the 1947 schedule had allowed for a value of £364,000, which was equivalent to 1100 units. For eommercial vehicles the 1948 value of United Kingdom licences was £500,000, or approximately 1000 units, as against £840,000, or 1*800 units, in 1947. Oanadian value for 194S was £181,000, representing 600 units, compared with £900,000, or 3000 units, in 1947. On commer-cial vehicles no provision had yet been made in the 1948 schedule for the. United States, which had a value of £300,000 representing 850 vehicles in 1947. The new licensing schedule reduced the- value of imports of all types of vehicles from all sources by nearly lialf, Mr. Brown said. Licences for motor-cars were reduced " by about £3,400,000, of which the United Kingdom took an approximate reducfeion of half this amount and the United States and Canada shared the balance. The United Kingdom had sufferexl equally with the other two nations, but as she had started off with more exports she would still be able to export more thau the other two.
