WON AFTER BREAKING DOWN NEAR POST
Soneri received a wonderful ovation after she had recorded the fmest winning weight-carrying effort in the history of the Winter Cup. It was only after a hard fight over the final furlong with Howe that Soneri showed what a great mare she is. She won hy a head after breaking down half a dozen strides from the post. She had been undei' a tloud prior to the race owing to heat in a leg and it was not surprising that the desperate battle With Howe found the weakness. Wlien Mr. Franlc Ormond 's great galloper, Toxeuma, won the Winter Cup in 1930 he carried the record weight of 11st. 51bs. Last Saturday Soneri won with 11.4. However, when Toxeuma won, the minimum was 9.0. Sinee 1932 the minimum weight f'or the race has been 8.0. Last Saturday 's field was a first-elass oue, so that Soneri 's gallant effort was an outstanding oue. When Oatalogue won lus third "Winter Cup/in 1939 he- carried 10.3.
