Three booklets intended to give would-be emigrants ofhcial in^ iormation have been jssued by the lmmigration Divis'ion of the Department of Labour and Employment. A good feature is that the publications are profusely illustrated and cover a wide field of activity. Co-operation Sought The new telephone exchange has functioned perfectiy since the changeover, reported the* postmaster, Mr. L, A. , Effects of Depression Comment on the fact that three applieants for discharge from bankruptcy had suflered their mis-r fortune during the world depression was made by Mr. Justice Fair in ihe Supreme Court at Palmerston Norch last week. "One was at the beginning, the second in the middle'and the third at the end of the depression," said His Honour in granting the applieatiops. Need for Understanding At the opening of the new Levin telephone exchange on Saturday, Mr. G. Milne,.- superintendentengineer for the distriet, appealed to all telephone subscribers to help the operators by taking notice of the lisi of new numbers which were circulated by the postmaster some days ago. "I ask for a sympathedc understanding by the public of che difficulties which the operators have to overcome on a new exchange," said Mr. Milne, Aithough 'it was not a difficult board to work, it was strange to the operators, and oesides this there were many new numbers. This should be overcome in a week. "Another thing," said Mr. Milne, "is that subscribers need only give one turn of the generator handle when ringi.ng the exchange." This was one of the many good features of the new board.
