FRIDAY NIGHT FIRE

SERIOUS DAMAGE AVER1?ED The ringing of the fire bell at about 7.45 p.m. on Friday evening brought shoppers and shop assistants from their stores ahd people from their homes in time to see the fire engine flash by with sirenscreaming to announce its debut to a fire. The scene of the outbreak was a goods shed in the railway yards, but f ortunately the •staff ' had the flames under control when the brigade arrived. No extensive damage was done, but had it not been for the prompt action of the staff in bringing a chemical extinguisher to bear on the flames, a serious fire could have resulted, as some 400 gallons of oil were stored near the scene.
