CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 3. The Canteroury Jockey Cluh opened its G-rand National Meeting at Riccarton on Saturday in perfect weather and the attendance of inore than 25,000 created a new record. Easy for Fairyhouse Fairyhouse, winner of tlie Christchurch Ilunt Cup Steeplechase at the Hunt Club's meeting a week earlier, won the Enfield Steeples bv half a dozen lengths .from Bravura, which won the Lawford HaclF and Hunters' Steejfies at the Hunt meeting. The issue was between them a long way from honie. Fairyhouse was early" in frout and, with a mile and a quarter still to go, was leading by a couple ot lengths from Bravura with four lengths to Hughsotis and Bailyaggan aliead of Paladeo and Edward. Bravura was with Fairyhouse at the next feuce but was outjumped and fairyhouse was clear with a mile to "go. At the sod wall Fairyhouse was three lengths clear of Bravura and 'there was a big gap to Bailyaggan ahead of Edward and Paladeo. The last-named was without a rider after the brush at the top of the straight and, after negotiating the earriage paddock brush, Fairyhouse went on to win easily from Bravura, well clear of Bailyaggan. Edward was fourth. Another for Riccarton Magnaform won- Ihe Cashmere Plate from Coral Arc and Conlidenee Triek, giving Riccarton stables anotlrer victory. Once ' the 'eourse proper was reached Liebestraum, Carry .-On, Coral Arc, Magnaform and Confidence Triek were all well in the pieture. Then Conlidenee Triek, Coral Arc and Magnaform sorted tliemseTves out and Magnaform won well from Coral Arc with Confidence Triek iii third place ahead of Broie and Liebestraum. The time for the six furlongs was better than 1.15, indicating that there was splendid winter going. Boolamskee Beats Desert Trek Desert Trek was f'avourite for the Juuipers' Elat, but he was beaten by Boolamskee after making up a lot of ground over the last bit. Glad , Fox and Royal Flash; 'Were responsible ' for most of the pace, apd six furlongs fi'om hoiue they were leading from Bay Robe and Periwig, King's Ace, Matador and Battle Chief. Then Boolamskee and Sphere began to 'move forward and they were right in the pieture as the field raced into the straight. Two fur-
longs from honie they were leading from King 's 'Ace, Periwig, Desert Trek, which was travelling fast, Glad Fox and Battle Chief, and Boolamskee liung on gamely to beat Desert Trek by a neck. Sphere was a good third and Periwig was fourth followed by Kiug's Ace. * Lorna Leigh Finished Well With a fast run from inside the three furlongs, Lorna Leigh settied the issue in the Paparua Handieap, which she . won by over a length from Julius Caesar and Frances. John o' London made the pace to the two where Whitley, Julius Caesar, Lorna Leigh, Playtos, Frances, Young Bob and Cipher were all well in tne pieture. Then Lorna Leigh raced tlirough to the from and once there she was not threatened. John o' London was fourth and then came Playtos, Kirkella, Dash o ' Dink, Whitley and Graeme. Surpeen's Brilliant Win Surpeen was fourth favourite for the Grand National Steeples, but after going to the front with two miles to go he was not headed. .At the tinie ho went to the front Red Glare, Page's Raid and Spirilluni were his nearcst attendants and Page's Raid came to grief at the stand doublo. The field was three light with a mile to go, for Abbey Lu and Tamerlane were others which had lost their riders. Going in to Cutts' the last time Surpeen was out in front with Red Glare next threu lengths away. Spirilluni was tliird. After the kennels brush double the ieaders were Surpeen, aS£>anish Maui. Spirilluni, Red Glare and Ronian Ned. After the sod wall Surpeen, jumping brilliantly, was six lengtlis in front oi Spanish Main, but Spanisli Maia luyJ closed the gap to two lengths at the big brush. Once over the last fence, however, Surjjeen drew out aud won by eight lengths from Spanish Main, ten lengths in front of Town Survey. Spirilluni and Red Glare wero next. The time, 7.9, was onlv oue second slower than that recorded last year. Duality Finished Fast „ After being well toward the rear oJ the field until half a mile from liome. Duality began to move forward aud he won tlie Trial Hurdles going away b> three lengths from Night Fighter aliead of Ruling Moment, Flying Ace and Montello d'Oro. The Crofter and John Gay lost their riders at the iirst hurdle. Duality was ridden by W. E. Carter-. Soneri's Second Winter Cup The great mare, Soneri, won liei second Winter Cup after a desperaU battle with Iloive over tlie last half furlong, and Findon, well back at the home turn, finished brilliantly for third. Wlien the field had settied down, Pensa cola and Night Blush were promineut aliead of Clyde Bridge, Lord Elgin, Detain, Howe, Verdant, Soneri, Good Cast, Sumra and Riverview. The leading division was mucli the same to the three, where Clyde Bridge went up to lead into the straight from Howe, Verdant, Soneri, Sahib, Deep Harmonv and Detain. With a furlong still to go Howe, Soneri and Findon were out in front, and Soneri won by a head from Howe. in front of Findon. Miss Medley made up a lot of ground to bc fourth, and she was followed by Bridge Acre, Clyde Bridge, Detain, Sahib and Lougsvvord. Soneri and W. J. Broughton were given an ovatiou as they rettirned Uo Dhe; bkfdcage.c * •> i Beechwood Just Won Beechwood, ridden by Broughton, won the coucluding event after another thrilliug fiuish, and the other placc-d horses were Deiiciency and Special Flight. Young Bob led to the straight from Beechwood, Vanity King, Ganjah, Special Flight and Deiiciency, and Beechwood had to beat ofT the challenges from Deiiciency and Special Flight. Copper Coin was fourth aud Ganjah fifth.
