AUSTRALIA WILL BE DIRECTLY HIT
Received Sunday, 7-0 p.m. GANBERRA, August 3. A warning that Australia would be directly hit by Britain 's desperate fight and that her economy must be geared to meet the crisis was given by Air. Chifiey at a Better Industrial Relations Conference between the Australasian Council of. Trade Unions and the Associated Cliambers of Manufacturers^ Iie also warned of a possible recession in the United States. The Commonwealth Government has rejeeted a strong appeal by employers for an embargo on all strikes. While eondemning petty strikes, Air. Chifiey said that some strikes were justified. The president of the Australasian Council of Trade Unions (Mr. P. J.. Clarey) said that a ban on all strikes would mean that unions would abandon their traditional right and that to aecept such a position would be a complete abdication. The conference decided today to frame a national poliey to increase -production. The general impression.of the delegates is that the conference, which is closed to the press, is going so smoothly that "something concrete must come out of it,"
