TRICKS OF THE TRADE

CONFESSIONS OF A RETAILER A common trick used by retailers to attract people into their shops was the deliberate placing of an inverted tag or card in their windows, and it was amazing the number of people who fell for it. Invariably they woulti come in to inform the shopkeeper that the card was upside dawn, and then inl variably bought something to cover

up their embarrassmenfc. This back-stage confession, was made to members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce by Mr. C. H. Andrews, during a talk on modern merchandising. Another trap which rarely failed, he said, was the placing of a mirror just inside the entrance of a shop. Women passing by always stopped to make adjusments to their hair or powder their noses, and then walked into the ;shop to prove that they reaily intqnded going in any case.
