LINKING OF MUNICIPALITIES
TWO MAYORS WILL BE FIRST TO USE NEW EXCHANGE The municipalities of Levin and Wellington will be linked on Saturday when the Mayor, Mr. ,H. B. Burdekin, offiOially Opens the new telephone exchange. The first call io pass through the boards will be from Mr. Burdekin to the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. Will AppletOh. Representatives ,of the LeVih Junior Chamber of Commerce, Horowhenua Electric Power Board, Horowhenua County Gouncil, Levin Borough Couhcil and Levin Fire Board will be present at the ceremdhy. The public are alSo invited to attend. The new telephone exchange has been imported from Englahd, and Is the most modern availablei It Consists of nine boards, and has accommodation for over 2000 subspribdrs. Installed in 1922, the original sections of the old exchange are the oldest and largest of their type in New Zealand. They were origlnally installed to accommodate 500 subscribers, but further sections have been added over the years Until now there are 1000 subscribers on seven boards. A compliment to the excellent work of Mr. Trask and his staff, who have been responsible for the ussembly of, the new equipment, Was made today by the postmaster, Mr. L. A. Whitham. The official opening ceremony takes place at 2.p.m. tomorrow.
