HOME-MADE BOMB SHATTERS MAN'S HAND
BLENllEIM, July 2S. An experiment with honiemade glnipowder had terrible consequences for Mr. Terence Mitcheil, of 22 Arthur Street, Blenheim, who on , Saturday afternoon liad half his lel't hand shattereff when a "boinb" he was manufaeturing- exploded. Mr. Mitcheil made the "bomb" from a three-ineh length of eiectric eonduit, the ends of which he plugged afteifilling the steel tube with a mixture of sodium chloride, sngar and eharcoai. He then set about boring a small hole to enable the fuse to be iitted. It \vaft while he was 2hokting the piping under the drill witii his left hhnd that the charge detonated. The explosion was a powerful one completeiy splitting the pipe and flattening it out. The f'ull foree was taken by Alr. Mitchells' left hand, wiiich, except for the' tlmmb, was severed across the palm. First aid was given by neighbours and Mr. Mitcheil was taken to hospital. where his condition today was reported as aatisfactory:
