Horowhenua Beat Wairarapa By Two Points
Wairarapa were unlucky not to won their senior B representative game on Saturday. They showed much better teamwork than Horowhenua and their backline performed some excellent work. The Horowhenua rearguard lined out too deep and had to run thirty yards at times to come up with the play. Wairarapa shpuld have taken greater advantage of this fault. In the first half play was fairly tight and the teams were fresh and keen* Wairarapa were a little while getting' used to Horowhenua's style of play. However, they were not long m showing the spectators that they could play a good game of football.
The first score went to Horowhenua; when after a scrummage near Wairarapa's twenty-five W. Jarvis took the ball, ran the length ' of the field, and- within three yards of the posts passed to D. Cole, who scored the try. W. Galloway had no trouble in converting. Horowhenua 5, Wairarapa o. Wairarapa showed their ability to hook the ball at all times, but they were penalised "for handling it in the scrum and Galloway, kicking for Horowhenua, succeeded with a neat penalty to make the score Horowhenua 8, Wairarapa 0. Then Wairarapa gained their first points. E. Welch kicking a good penalty goal. Horowhenua 8, Wairarapa 3.
Second Half By. the second half both teams were looking very tired as a result of their strenuous play, and the game became considerably slower. Wairarapa had many opportunities to score from penalties awarded them, and it was at this point that they should have tumed the tables on Horowhenua. Another penalty was awarded to Wairarapa and Welch again secured the points and the scores were not altered in the remainder of the game. Horowhenua 8, Wairarapa 6. After this the game livened up again and wasimuch faster, with better football generally. Three minutes before the end of the game Wairarapa pressed hard and succeeded in forcing almost over Horowhenua's line. There were five scrums at this one point and it seerned as if they .would score, but Horowhenua were awarded a penalty and before they could get up the field again the whistle had sounded. The referee was Mr. F. G. Carrington.
