Personal , Mr. V. J. Bateman left yesterday morning on a holiday visit to the South Island. The friends of Mr. Doug. Pedersen will regret to learn that he is still confined to his bed following a football injury received last Saturday. Shannon in the News The recent Shannon floods received a full report in a Melbourne newspaper, a copy of which was received by a local resident yesterday. The report gave a full account of the breaking of the stopbank and the complete submerging of the Buckley area. The' Wairarapa flood did not receive mention. Near Tragedy at Pah While playing. at Poutu Pah early this week, a two-year-old Maori child fell into a well. His plight was noticed by other children, who siunmoned help. The child's mother was able to recover him without difflculty and he was none the worse for his adventure. Had the mishap passed unnoticed he would have been drowned, as the well is quite deep. System of Flood Warnings A flood warning system for settlers in the Manawatu-Oroua River Board's area was decided upon by the board at its monthly meeting in Palmerston North last week. The engineer to .the board (Mr. H. R. Farquhar) will notify the position to a member of the board in each of the board's five sub-divisions, and they will inform farmers in their pariicular areas. Shannon Won't See "Monty" The Shannon Borough Councll made representation to ihe UnderSecretary of the Department of Internal Affairs for Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery to pass through Shannon on his return to Palmerston North. A letter was received from the Under-Secretary at the fortnightly meeting of the council on Tuesday evening, advising that Viscounc Montgomery will be travelling by air to Palmerston North and therefore will not be able to pass ihrough Shannon.
