PROTEST AT IMPORTATION OF FIREWORKS
DUNEDIN, July 24. A large consignment of flreworks recently reached Dunedin and was almost completely 'disposed of to youngsters who had not seen flreworks before. Frequent explosions in suburban areas testify tq the popularity of flreworks. Mr. A. M. Davidson (principal of the Jticandrew Road Intermediate Scliool) has been prompted to protest. "First things should comc flrst in the issue of. import licences," he said, "and thev should be provided for those goods which are essential in preference to those of doubtful value to the communLtv. ' ' He complained that, at a time wiien the whole community was joined in a canipaign to send food and clothing overseas, such things as flreworks wcre being lirought into the country from Ei.iglajid.. Tliev occupied shipping space | when the building industry could not procure inaii.v of the essential tools and materials for the provision of adequate housing. He added that, in any case, flreworks were dangerous playtliings.
