Yqrk Takes Off Viseount Montgomery's. York aircraft took off from Ohakea for Whenuapai yesterday. During her s;ay at Ohakea the plane has been giyen a thorough overhaul, and has oeen cleaned and. polished from top to bottom. After a three-quarter hour test flight the plane took off for Whenuapai at 2.15 p.m. Assistance for Britain A very fine contribution in the sending of food to Britain has been made by ihe Queen Street Hall. To date 950 Ibs. oi' food and 44 lbs. of soap have been despatched to families in the Homeland. In addition the Queen Street Hall has given very generous. assistanae to CORSO with cush donations- and sewing. ' n _ Qverdue Library Books *" A considerable amount of trouble was being experieneed at the Levin Public Library with overdue books, advised the ehairwoman of the library committee, Cr. H. E. Bowen, at a meeting of the Levin Borough Councii on Monday nigh't. By far the greater propordon of the books overdue had been issued to children, she- addedThe Town Clock Comment on the lengthy absence of the town clock from the Levin Posc Office was made by the Mayor, Mr. H, B. Burdekin, at a meeting of the Levin Borough Councii this week. He said that the postmaster, Mr. L. A. Power Extensions During the past month 81 applications for extensions had been received, stated the engineer, Mr. J. F. Bryce, in a repqrt to the Horowhenua Power Board yesterday. During the sarae period 28 new consumers and 28 extensions had been connected. These comprised 27 lighting and heating installations, 23 ranges, 25 waterheaters, one milking motor, one separator motor, two pumping motors and 23 small industriai motors. Reading Popular Books issued from the Levin Public Library during the past month show an increase of 820 over June of last year. The aoting librarian, Mrs. M, Merritt, gave the following figures of books issued at Monday night's meeting of the Levin Borough Councii : — National Library Service: Fiction 281, nonfiction 316, tqtal 597. Levin stock: Fiction 5739, non-fiction 339, total 8078. Juniorsj 335. The gra'hd total is thus 7010. During the monih 25 new members were enrolled and 42 new books added to the stock. Abattoir Revenue The fees at the Levin Abattoir for the month of. J,une totalled £1073 3s lld as eompared with £899 13s 4d in the same mcmth qf last year, reported the manager, Mr. F. E. Larsen, at a meeting of the Levin Borough Councii this. week, "I think we can Iook fqrwa'rd to an even greater increase jn the near future," eommented Cr, C.
