LOCAL AND GENERAL
PclsoiirI Mr. W. Keay, at present in hospital in Palmerston North, under - went an operation on Friday and is reported to be making progress. A Windfall A cake of fcoa'p sent from Australia to England was found to contain a sovereign. There was a rush for soap for a time but there appears to have been no further "windfalls." Rainfall in Otaki j The rainfall in Otaki for the 24 hours ending 9.30 a.m. on Friday was no less than 1.64 inches. The rain caused a good deal of flooding in paddocks. Rivers are still carrying more than their usual quota of water. Australian Strikes A letter from Australia states that there is to be' a general strike throughout the rubber industry on July 25 to force the universal applicaiion of the 40-hour week throughout the State. It is, says the writer, another siupid/ anomaly of the political set-up in Australia. Workers under the State atyard work the 40 hours, but -other workers in the same factory who come under the Federal award have to con inue to work the 44 .hours. T'hus quite often a man finishes work, say, at dinner time, and his mate in the same factory watches ,him go, and then reluctantly goes back to his bench to com-plete his J 44 hours. The position is a ridiculous one, concluded the writer.
