FIRST SIGNS IN BRITAIN OF DOLLAR SHORTAGE
LOXDOX, July 16. The announcement that £10,000,000 worth of British bist'.uits, eliocolates, .jains and beer was to be exported, is interpreteri as the first signs of a (lollar shortage in Britain 's larder. Mr. Straehev asked the Commons to litd]) hiin by explaining the reasons for the decision to their constituents. The quantity of .janis, chorolates and biscnits earma'rked for export would use about one-half of one per cent. of the total sugar supplies. about four-tentlis of one per cent. of the total supplies of fats, and a still smaller pereentage ■M cereals. With them Britain would oarn sullicient hard currency to buy Tiearlv 3(10,000 tons of extra feeding oiulfs which would be irsed to improve the food supplies at honie. II e asked Britain's friends abroad to realise this when tliev saw small supplies of British biscuits, jams and eliocolates in their shops while Britain was coniplaining about food shortages. British brewers state that the amount of beer exported would be too sinai] to alTect home supplies and welcomed the relaxation of export control.
