RETURNED SERVICEMEN MEET
Mr. ■ J. W. Ritclrie . presided over tbe July meeting of the Shannon branch of the Returned Services' Association, held in Laurvig's Hall on Saturday evening. Those present were Messrs. J*. M. Kenny, E. J. Gunning (secretary), S. W. Barber., W. L. Carter; R^Hook, D. Cole; J. Sinclair, E. Morris1, ,H- D. Aitchison,- F. O. Burtt, B. Clayton, C. Guerin, E. Veale, R. Lange, O. Tippler, J. Reid, S. Spencer, R. S. Downes and R. L. Qui'nlan. Apologies for absenc.e were received from- Messrs: J. Jones and V. J. Bateman. Transfers into the Shannon branch were accepted from Messrs. P. Lucas (Wellington), J. Claridge (Palmerston North) , C. Penketh (Pahiatua! and P. Booth (Hawera). Mr. S. W. Rees was transferred to the Tokomaru subbranch from Gisborne. The foilowing members were transferred out from the Shannon branch: Messrs. H. C. Haley'.to Wellington, R. Greig to Palmerston North and R. R. Veale to Wellington. The secretary reported that the financial membership. now stood at 189, being made up by 153 Shannon and 36 Tokomaru members. Of these 124 were second war members. , An account for £33 for supplying 44 food parcels was approved for payment from the special parcels for Britain fund. Mr. W. L. Carter made reference to the exeellent work being carried out by the Palmerston North R.S.A. in providing cigarettes and to'oacco, etc., to inmates of the Palmerston North Public'Hospital, and moved that the Shannon branch make a donation towards the cost of this work, as there were a number of Shannon R.S.A. men in the hospital from time to time. On the motion of Mr. Barber, it was agreed that a donation of £5 be granted. The secretary mentioned that the credit balance in the special fund for the parcels for ex-service-men in Britain now stood at £33. All present agreed that further funds would have to be • coliected . for this purpose. Mr. B. Clayton, president of the entertaimnent committee,; reported on the arrangements made for the function to be tencjered to those who had helped the R.S.A. in its work in ihe past. Mr. Clayton stated that the funcjibn would be staged in the Druids\HaU on Thursday, August 7, and that entertainers were coipi^g.A^Pl' ttie.Ohakea "Air Station. ' ;lSi '■■■: On the motion of Mr. R. The matter was left to the Shannon Rehabilitation Committee (Messrs S. W. Barber, C. Guerin and J. T. Bovis) to attend to. Mr. J. M. Kenny .brought to the notice of members the card evenings being conducted each - week for- the funds of the women's section, and asked for"' the support of members. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the ehair and later the members were the guests of the women's section at supper.
