GOING A SHADE SLOWER THAN ON FIRST DAY

Panope, winner of the Members' Handicap after a sound perfonnance in the Stewards' Handicap on the first day, was the only favourite to win on Saturday. Other first fancies to return place dividends were Desert Trek, Good Armour and Robin's Reward. Good Performanc'e by Corineus Mary Lee, Selected, True Friend and Peter Brierley were scratched for the opening event, the Corunna Hurdles, and the winner wa's Corineus from Desert Trek and Pedantic. Desert Trek lost ground early and Monte Cristo, Revetir, Corineus, Solo Park and Allislopef '' were prominent through the straight - the first time. Duality moved up st'eadily along the back and he led into the straight followed by Montello d'Oro, Ruling Moment, Corineus, r'Uiid Pedantic. Corineus dashed to theifront after landing over the last fenc'e and won decisively by three lengths from Desert Trek which finished brilliantly to cut Pedantic ;out of second money. Hammond's gelding Bay Robe did not give his backers much to worry about in the Lambton Hurdles, which he won decisively after having led for most of the journey. Special Flight Beats Morotai Special Flight, from Wingatui, won the Seatoun Handicap, and those in the minor places were Morotai, Tommy Gun and Blank Cheque. Morotai, Sir Warrior aud Relampago vrere slow to leave the mark. Moreton Bay was setting the pace when the field had settled down and others well in the picture as they raced into the straight were Special Flight,

Tommy Gun and Ratatu. Special Flight soon had charge in the straight and she won easily by over three lengths from Morotai which finished gamely to cut .Tommy Gun out of second money. There was no change into the straight but Longsword worked his way through to have charge a furlong from home. Then Valley Boy, which had come from the "clouds," raced up to take him on. A. Midwood applied the pressure and it was some moments before ,it was . apparent that Lougsword would nold the gallant horse from Morrinsville. Two lengths away eame Robin's Reward, which had made up a lot of groufid, and which responded under pressure to beat Honora by half a length. For a moment it looked as if she wourld win easily but Concrete finished with courage less tha-n a length away. Two lengths further back were Lord Bradbury and Magnus Lux aud the photo finish showed Lord Bradbury to be half a head in front of Magnus Lux. Aristea looked likely half way down the straight but she weakened a furlong from home and finished fifth ahead of Salut d'Amour.
