There had been unnecessary waste in the past which today eould not be folerated. New Zealand had been almost entirely dependent on Britain for her requirements but Britain 's eheniical production had heen reduced through the coal shortages. British produeers were doing their utmost to re-establish their normal. rate of production but as the coal position was by no means clear as yet, it was thus a mattei' for conjectnre regarding the position for the remainder of this year. It had been suggested that it would be to the advantage of any industry to submit to the Department of Industries and Commerce, 'its basic requirements of any commodit'ies in short supply so that the department might be able to assist to proeure additional supplies a'nd possibly grant priorities. This could only be sueeessful if there were eomplete cooperation between the units engaged in the in dustry but it was obvious that it would be in the national interest if it were followed, ,
