KEEP AHEAD OF OTHERS IN RESEARCH
ADELAIDE, July 9. The importance of research was emphasised by Field Marshal Alontgomery in a special statement from Government House in reply to a letter published in an Adelaide newspaper. The letter attributed to liim a statement that "there will be no more wars. Tlierefore, why spend all tliis money on roeket ranges and defenee?" Field .Marshal Alontgomery denied making aay sucli statement. Money for rearmament and re-equipment spent on w-eapons which might rapidly beeome out of date in a scientilic world, would be quite wrong. Any available money should be spent on scientilic research. "Any nation which is niggardly with money s'ftent on scientilic and technical research is laying up great trouble for itself in future, " he said, adding that his slatements eouhl be summarised as follow: Go easv today on big schemes of re-equipment and rearmament. Carry on with wliat was left over from the war and intensify scientific research. Keep well ahead in the progress of science so that you are well equipped to be ahead of vour potential enemies. Too many heartv handshakes have injured Field Alontgomery 's right hand which has had to be dressed by a doctor. A poweri'ul handgrip in Ifobart is believed to liave started the damage.
